For Salaries (Graduate Research Assistant [GRA] / Scholarships / Teaching Assistant)
Your W2 form is typically issued either electronically via Workday or mailed in paper format to your residence, usually by the end of February of the following year.
There have been instances where school staff failed to distribute the form and the system did not record that a W2 should be provided; be sure to follow up with the school if this occurs.
If you receive a 1042-S form, please double-check that Box 13b, the Country Code, is TW and not CN.
Reporting of Foreign Gifts
Generally, the responsibility for reporting a gift for tax purposes lies with the Donor (the giver, not the recipient). However, if a foreign person gives you a gift exceeding $100,000 USD, then the Donee (recipient) is required to file Form 3520, Annual Return To Report Transactions With Foreign Trusts and Receipt of Certain Foreign Gifts.
